But that’s only the beginning. The book signing will be followed by a week-long exhibit of their work in Silvermine’s Student Gallery, opening on January 9, 2018 from 5-7 PM. The project includes both visual and writing components and has been sponsored, for the fourth consecutive year, by Bankwell.
This year’s subject matter was animals, and Vinci took the students to the Stamford Nature Center to study and photograph the animals in their natural environment. Once their photographs were finished they met with author and poet Page McBrier and created poetry to accompany their images. The printed book was the finished product of this adventure. McBrier is the author of 44 books for young readers, including the award-winning New York Times bestseller, Beatrice’s Goat. She has also been designated as a Teaching Artist by the Connecticut Commission on the Arts.
Sophia Gevas, Director of Silvermine’s Outreach Education Program, noted “this was a unique project that enabled the students to learn photography and editing skills on the visual side and then discover their creative writing talents by composing the accompanying poems. At the same time, they gained skills in creative thinking, problem solving and working together to produce something they will remember forever and be able to revisit in the library.”
The public is cordially invited to attend both the book signing ceremony on December 7th and the opening of the art exhibit at Silvermine on January 9th.
Silvermine Arts Center's Art Partners Program has been providing professional Teaching Artists to design and execute exciting arts classes to under-served students in Stamford and Norwalk public schools since 1992. The distinctiveness of Art Partners centers on the quality of the teaching artists and their close collaboration with classroom teachers or program directors to augment student academic achievement.
