Westport, CT - The Westport Farmers’ Market, Fleishers Craft Butchery, and Patagonia Provisions will present a screening of the award-winning Sundance documentary LOOK & SEE, a powerful cinematic portrait of Wendell Berry—farmer, activist, and undoubtedly one of America’s most significant living writers. The film will be screened on March 5th at Fairfield Theater Company.
Often called “a prophet for rural America,” Berry has long been a voice for the communities that are so often overlooked by the media. Filmmaker Laura Dunn skillfully weaves Berry’s poetic and prescient words with gorgeous cinematography and the testimonies of his family and neighbors, all of whom are being deeply affected by the industrial and economic changes to their agrarian way of life.
“It’s a conversation that is more urgent now than ever, as we find ourselves in a deeply divided nation where urban consumers remain so completely disconnected from the rural producers whose work sustains their very lives,” says director Laura Dunn. “Wendell shows us with extraordinary sensitivity, just what fidelity to a place and to one's own community can truly mean.”
That community spirit is evident in the planning of this special Sundance film. “This is the second collaboration this winter between the Westport Farmers’ Market, Fleishers, and Patagonia to bring our own community together around such an important message,” said Lori Cochran-Dougall, executive director of the Westport Farmers’ Market. “And this event promises to be a highlight of the year –food, drink, giveaways, and a meaningful panel discussion Wendell himself would be proud to participate in.”
Produced by Robert Redford, Terrence Malick, and Nick Offerman, and filmed across four seasons in the farming cycle, LOOK & SEE blends observational scenes of farming life and interviews with farmers and community members with evocative, carefully framed shots of the surrounding landscape.
“To sponsor a showing of this film narrated by Berry himself is a beyond exciting,” noted Sam Garwin, CEO of Fleishers. “Berry has been a keen observer and defender of agrarian life; hearing his observations in his own voice is powerful beyond words.”
LOOK & SEE will be shown at the Fairfield Theater Company and tickets are only $5.00. Refreshments will be provided by Patagonia Provisions, Fleishers Craft Butchery, Cross Culture Kombucha and Fairfield Cheese Company, with beer samples provided by Black Hog Brewing. A discussion will follow, and all proceeds benefit the Westport Farmers’ Market. Tickets are available at https://www.fairfieldtheatre.org/shows/stageone/look-and-see
